MARKET Harborough Tennis Club were fortunate to be able to hold their finals on a warm, sunny and calm day.
The men’s singles featured the same players as last year – Richard Breag and Neil Shorrock – and the former looked as though he was going to repeat last year’s success as, after being 1-5 down, he produced numerous angled volleys and searing double-h
anded backhands to win the first set 7-5. However Shorrock responded in the next two sets by placing balls so well that Breag was unable to use his fierce pace to advantage, and in a match which lasted two-and-a-half hours Shorrock took the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to regain the title he first held in 2004.

The women’s singles was over in a much shorter time when Philippa Bradshaw, playing in her first ever final, proved too consistent for Janice Glover and won 6-2, 6-3. Bradshaw returned Glover’s powerful serves effectively and did not allow her opponent time to employ her normal variety of shots.

The men’s doubles was completed in equally brief time as new member Chris Bevan and Tom Cooper, who rejoined the club last year, outpaced Tom Bradshaw and Mark Ellis 6-1, 6-2.

The women’s doubles was won 6-2, 6-3 by Janice Glover and Sue Roberts against Lesley Paris and junior Sophie Weston.

The mixed doubles was a hotly contested match when Janice Glover, playing in her third consecutive final, and Sacha Richardson finally won the first set on a tie-break against Erik van Diepen and Sue Roberts. Van Diepen played a stragetic game and aided by well placed volleys from Roberts, they won the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. Thefinals day was a special one for Roberts as although she has been a member for many years, she has never before won a title – and now her name will appear twice on the honours board.
