Weldon 1 Harborough Town 2
HARBOROUGH Town FC finally gained revenge over their conquerors in last season's division one title race, with this hard-fought victory.
The result was all the more satisfying for Town as Weldon had not lost at home for nearly a year – and the result sees Harborough join Harpole as Northants Combination leaders with a third of the season gone.
Town were lucky not to go a goal down ea
rly on. The hosts were awarded a penalty after keeper Glen Giles upended a striker and he was perhaps fortunate to stay on the field. The resulting spot-kick was slammed against a post.
Town were expected to be stung into action but this did not happen as Weldon continued to press and eventually took the lead via a deflected effort.
Harborough created only one opportunity in the first half and were thankful it went in as Rob Barnett claimed his fifth goal in three games by outpacing the defender and coolly slotting home.
The score stayed at 1-1 until four minutes from time when Ben Gamble was emerged as the hero – he pounced on a defensive error to round the goalie and put the ball into an empty net.
This Saturday Town are again away from home, at Corby Madisons (ko 2pm).
Desborough Town went out of the County Senior Cup in midweek after going down 3-2 at Long Buckby after several controversial linesmens' decisions.
Iain Blaikie scored both Town goals and hit a post in a match they were unlucky to lose.
Without a first team match at the weekend, the Desborough spotlight fell on the reserves and they drew 1-1 at home to Blackstones, with new signing Damien Heskey – cousin of Emile – striking the home goal two minutes after the kick-off.
