AN extraordinary sequence of events saw Market Harborough Rugby Club go clear at the top of the Midlands 4 East (South) table.
Saturday's scheduled opponents Vauxhall Motors pulled out of the fixture on Friday afternoon when they announced they couldn't raise a side, and as a result Harborough were awarded a 'home walkover' and two league points.
That was followed by news t
hat Long Buckby had pulled out of their next three scheduled fixtures, one against Harborough – who were awarded a further two league points.
How this will affect the league at the end of the season is still down to results but a realistic table still places Harborough clear of nearest rivals Peterborough Lions. And a recalculation of 'points scored for' would also leave Harborough with in a superior position.
Harborough 2nds racked up an emphatic 50-0 league win at Shepherd.
The visitors played 15-man attacking rugby, making excellent use of the quick ball they were given. The defensive play was superb too.
Both forwards and backs managed to score, with James Lee and Harry Hurst getting two apiece and one each for Ed Bale, Ian Jones, Ross Harrison, and Charlie Standley. Bale converted five of these.
Harborough 3rds were pipped 19-18 in their top-of-the-table league encounter at Syston.
Yet again, due to absence and illness, they fielded a much-changed side and after the loss they now have the same points as Syston but a slightly worse points difference.
Syston had a much heavier pack and were able to utilise this at the scrums. Despite this Harborough still managed to score three tries, through man of the match debutant Luke Bishop (two) and Michael Woodford scored the other.
Rob Vials also landed a penalty but it was not enough to see Harborough home. Gareth Rice had an excellent tackling game on his debut performance.
Another powerful performance by Harborough Veterans saw them come through a close game at Kettering.
Forward experience again shone through from battle-hardened comrades. Mick Robinson, Craig Smith, Scott Davidson and Bob Lee all competed to win ball for what is now becoming a dominant back line with pace, precision and power.
Co-ordination from Chris Gladman saw four tries run in by Russ Williamson, Alex Houghton and Simon Conroy (two) for a 20-10 Harborough victory.
Harborough team selections for this Saturday are:
