DESPITE atrocious weather Market Harborough Rugby Club were able to host one of the largest Girls' Pitch and Play events ever held in Leicestershire.
The 100-plus girls had mixed experience of the game but many were complete novices.
The 12 to 17-year-olds attended to have a go on the day and took part in a host of skills sessions led by coaches from the East Midlands team and regional, county and club players.
Sessions were focused on awareness in attack, core stability using pilates techniques, speed of hands with body flexibility and retaining the ball in contact.
Coach Daren Parker said: "The girls showed great commitment and a high degree of skill during the sessions, which certainly tested their ability to perform under pressure."
Training games followed, allowing all the girls to play in their preferred positions.
Each game was supported by three coaches who ensured a safe, learning environment for the girls to show their capabilities.
Daren added: "Due to the success of the Pitch and Play, we are now looking at making it an annual event."
l Market Harborough Girls are recruiting new players for this season.
They are opening up their training sessions to girls aged 12 to 17 who may not be available to play on Sundays but who would still like to train, keep fit and have fun. Training is on Wednesday nights from 7 to 8.30pm.
