ON THE day that the track and field events at the Beijing Olympics drew to a close, so Fleckney and Kibworth Running Club brought the curtain down on their own Mini Olympics for junior athletes.
The tournament has run over the past fortnight and in addition to various running events for the first time competitors tried out field disciplines such as the long jump and the shot putt.
To celebrate the occasion a special sprints coaching session was delivered by the Leicestershire and Rutland AAA women’s 100 and 200 metres championship Hannah Ingram.
A former member of the Leicester Coritanians club, she has recently joined the renowned Birchfield Harriers as she aims to raise her own profile in the sprint events.
Head coach for Fleckney and Kibworth Dave Wheeler said: “This was an excellent and refreshing session, hugely enjoyed both by the athletes and the coaches.
“Whereas our own skill sets are focused on endurance events, it was educational to work with someone who brings a new perspective to speed work. It was a valuable contribution as we look to raise our offering in junior athletes.”
At the conclusion of the Mini Olympics there was a double for Kibworth brother and sister Luke and Charlotte Mathers, who emerged as the leading athletes, but this was in the end a close-run affair with all the participants having their special moments against the inspirational backdrop of the Beijing Games taking place on the other side of the world.
