A DANCE project is set to be rolled out to five new areas in the Harborough district.
The Step Out programme was being piloted in Broughton Astley and Tilton on the Hill but its success – up to 70 people attending some sessions – means classes are now being expanded to new locations.

From Thursday, September 4, dance sessions will begin at Harborough’s Working Men’s Club (Kingfisher Lounge), Lutterworth’s Swiftway Centre, Fleckney Sports Centre, Medbourne Village Hall and Thurnby Memorial Hall.

Step Out is the result of a successful Lottery funding bid from the Harborough District Sport and Activity Alliance (HDSAA). The programme is being co-ordinated by Harborough District Council’s community services team.

Styles of dance on offer include salsa, tap, jazz, rock and roll, mambo, African, ballroom and street dance.

The emphasis of the project is to provide fun, energetic sessions for all to enjoy (under-16s must be accompanied by an adult).

The weekly sessions are run by qualified dance instructors, are suitable for beginners and there is no need to be accompanied by a partner.

Paul Bremner, the council’s portfolio holder for healthy communities, said: “Step Out is an initiative I fully support as a great way to have fun, learn great dance moves, meet people and get fit all at the same time.

“I hope many more people will join in on the opportunities in their area as the pilot scheme is expanded across the district.”

Phil Jarvis, chairman of HDSAA, added: “Around £10,000 was received by the HDSAA for the delivery of seven, 25-week dance programmes across the district.

“Each location will receive five different types of dance with five weeks of each for the community to get active and enjoy dancing.”

Full dates of the sessions are published at www.harboroughsport.co.uk or in a leaflet from Harborough District Council’s offices in Adam and Eve Street, by phoning 01858 828282 or emailing customer.services@harborough.gov.uk.

Session cost £2 and people do not need to book in advance.
