A VALIANT effort was put in by the town's brass band at the National Championships on Sunday but Harborough just finished outside the top six.
Harborough Band battled it out against 15 other bands at the Harrogate International Centre in North Yorkshire in Section 2 of the UK championships.

It was only the sixth time the band had made the finals in its 111-year history and was the first time it had made successive appearances.

The band finished seventh and although members were disappointed not to win silverware, it represented a jump of eight places compared to last year.

President Mark Stamp said: "It is a nerve-wracking experience performing in such a large, imposing hall to such a knowledgeable audience and no doubt many players were nervous.

"We now know that we still have some way to go if we are to win a major championship but with such a young band, time is on our side."

Harborough made the grade after finishing runners-up at a regional qualifying round in Bedworth in March.

Harborough Band is performing alongside Tracey Holderness at St Dionysius Church on Saturday from 7.45pm in aid of the NSPCC. See the Mail's leisure section, The Guide for more details.
