A COMPETITION to find Lutterworth's new town crier proved one of the highlights of the showground activities.
The town had been without a crier since Dick Cousins hung up his handbell in April this year following eight years of service.

But Simon Todd, of Leicester Road, is now set to take up the mantle after he emerged victorious in the competition, judged by town mayor Cllr Ken Seymour and representatives from the Loyal Company of Town Criers.

Mr Todd beat off competition from district and county councillor Rosita Page and Lutterworth Opera Group member Julian Hargreaves to win the coveted prize.

He will now be registered with the Loyal Company of Town Criers before taking up his post. Mr Todd said: "I'm joining 600 years of tradition. It's quite daunting at the moment but it might sink in a bit later when I get the bell and the hat."
