MORE than 1,000 reusable bags were given away to shoppers during an action day held in the town centre.
Harborough Improvement Team's environment group held a roadshow in The Square on Friday (May 16) as part of its campaign to reduce the number of plastic bags used in the town.
Organisers estimate that about 1,200 reusable bags - donated by town businesses - were handed out to shoppers during the day while 512 people pledged to support the campaign.
The roadshow featured a plastic bag 'amnesty', where people could drop off their old plastic bags, and a draw with prizes including books on the environment and designer shopping bags.
Leicestershire County and Harborough District councils also ran stalls offering recycling advice and handing out free goodies, including coasters made from recycled vending cups and pencil cases made from old tyres.
